I am from Norwich, a city in the East of England which is about 100 miles North East of London. Norwich has a population of around 300,000 people and it is an interesting contrast to most other cities in the UK because it is so isolated from other cities (the nearest city would be Colchester or Cambridge and they are at least an hour away). Norwich is in the county of Norfolk which is renowned for it’s picturesque countryside and coastline.

It is a beautiful city rich in history and culture and there are lots of things to do. Norwich, was originally the capital of England before London and the remains of the city walls in addition to the beautiful Cathedral and Norman Castle are the most prominent reminders of Norwich’s historical prestige. Norwich has become a modern and cosmopolitan city. The forum, is the library in the city and it was built after the old building was burnt to the ground. It is not only an interesting piece of architecture and a library but it has transformed itself into a social centre of the city. There are restaurants, cafes, comedy clubs, the local news team is based here and it provides a meeting place for many young people. It is only a stone’s throw away from the theatre and my favorite place in the city the Chapelfield shopping centre which has every shop you could ever want! Norwich is also home to the Norwich City football club or commonly known as the ‘canaries’ for the their yellow kit and the most famous products to originate from my region would have to be Colmans mustard and the car company Lotus are based nearby.

Whilst I will always call Norwich my home, I have been lucky enough to go to university in arguably one of the prettiest cities in the UK, Durham. Durham is in the North East of England, near Newcastle and is home to one of the UK’s most prestigious universities and Durham was also used for filming for many of the Harry Potter films. The Castle and Cathedral feature as parts of Hogwarts school in the films and the buildings themselves are extremely impressive and some of the oldest in the UK. The city has maintained many of its roots and the majority of the pavements in the centre are cobbled and a high percentage of the shops are boutiques making Durham one of the most unique cities in the country. Due to the high percentage of students, the population of Durham doubles when the students return, Durham has a very diverse nightlife and it’s home to Klute, officially the ‘worst’ (but many people will argue that it’s the best) nightclub in Europe. I am currently in my third year of studies at Durham University which as a modern languages student is spent abroad to improve our spoken language and understanding of foreign cultures. Although I am part of the Erasmus scheme, I chose to spend my year earning money and gaining work experience through the British Council. I was lucky enough to be placed in Jávea and I will be working in the school until the end of May when I will move to France for the last remaining months of my year abroad. I will return to Durham in October to complete my last year of studies.

A lo largo del curso los alumnos de inglés han participado en una serie de actividades relacionadas con la lengua inglesa y la cultura anglosajona: teatro en inglés (alumnos de 3º, 4º, 1º BAT), coreografía canción Hip-hop (2ºD), juicios teatralizados (4ºESO), actuación musical (3º, 4º, 1ºBAT y 2ºBAT), guías turísticas (Taller Monográfico Inglés para viajar 4º), elaboración de una revista en inglés (1º Optativa Inglés Segundo Idioma) y, finalmente, una exposición de clausura de los dos años del proyecto Comenius "Healthy Living".

Los Osos (California)

My hometown in America is a little town called Los Osos on the central coast of California. It´s small but it has its unique qualities that make it special.

When I think of Los Osos the first thing that comes to mind is the Elfin Forest. The Elfin Forest is a protected estuary of various types of plants and animals that has a boardwalk built in it for walking. It´s a beautiful and peaceful piece of nature. It overlooks the marshy bay that connects to the Pacific Ocean. From the Elfin Forest you can also see the Morro Rock which is the huge and famous mountain in the city of Morro Bay that´s only a ten minute drive away.

Besides the beautiful view from the Elfin Forest, Los Osos also has the Baywood Pier. It´s a small pier that´s on the marshy bay and is another beautiful and relaxing place to be. There´s a popular little cafe as well, where you can buy a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy the view.

Every Monday afternoon, near the bay, there´s the Los Osos Farmers Market where local farmers sell lots of organic products like fruit, vegetables, bread pastries, tea, coffee and much more. It´s a lovely time to talk and walk with friends while buying fresh food.

Also, if you drive ten minutes up a hill you come to Montaña de Oro which is a beach as well as a camp ground. It´s a wonderful place to hike and get fresh air buts it´s not recommended to swim in this small beach area. It´s a beautiful beach surrounded by cliffs and rocks but that makes it dangerous to swim and the sand is at a steep slope down into the ocean which makes the waves dangerous. However it´s an amazing view to look at in awe.

The small town of Los Osos may not be the most exciting or the most active place in California but it has a special beauty in the nature that surrounds the whole town that you really can´t find in any another place.

Hoy un grupo de alumn@s de 1ºESO, 3ºESO, 1ºBACHILLERATO Y 2ºBACHILLERATO ha ofrecido una actuación para el alumnado y profesorado del centro. Aquí tenéis algunas imágenes que hemos podido sacar, pese a los problemas con la cámara de vídeo. Colgaremos más fotografías tan pronto como sea posible.
Mil gracias nuevamente a los que habéis colaborado:
-A los integrantes del grupo que semana tras semana han dedicado tiempo e ilusión (mucho y mucha, por cierto) a ensayar para hacer esto posible.
-Al público que ha asistido, especialmente al alumnado, que ha demostrado un enorme respeto por nuestro trabajo.
-Al profesorado y a la Dirección del centro, que nos ha facilitado las cosas y nos ha felicitado, animado y apoyado.

21 JUNIO DÍA DE LA MÚSICA

Aunque la música está presente a todas horas en nuestras vidas, también hay un día (una semana para ser exactos) para celebrar la música.

A poca gente no le gusta la música. Si hay algo que consigue la música, como pocas cosas lo hacen, es unir a la gente salvando barreras de idioma, edad, cultura, nacionalidad, ideología...

Para conmemorar este día, qué mejor que un video de The Who. Hoy la película basada en su ópera rock Quadrophenia y protagonizada por ellos mismos ha cumplido 30 años. La actuación que os invito a ver (Woodstock 1969) cumple este verano 40 años. Pensaréis que están pasados de moda, pero conocéis su música muy bien ya que sirve de sintonía a la popular serie de televisión CSI.

The Who es un grupo inglés nacido en Londres en 1962. Eran originalmente cuatro: Pete Townsend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle y Keith Moon. El último falleció por sobredosis en 1978.

BOOK REVIEWS II: Twilight (by Denise Talatinian 4ºESO)

Twilight- Stephenie Meyer

Twilight is the first part of the Twilight Saga which is the four book Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Its about a young girl called Bella Swan who moves to a small town called Forks with her dad. At school she notices a boy who´s called Edward Cullen. Edward is very cold towards Bella which iritates her a lot. But then he becomes good friends, even though he repeatedly tells her that she is putting herself in danger by being his friend. Then one day she goes to a beach and meets Jacob Black, he tells her about these myths that there are about Edward's family which state that he and his whole family are vampires. Bella believes him but she doesn't care because she's in love with Edward. She tells Edward her theory about him being a vampire and he shows her all these amazing things he can do. One day he shows her how his whole family play baseball at super speed and super strength when three nomad vampires come to them Laurent, Victoria and James. James realises that Bella isn't a vampire and starts hunting her but Edward's family fly her out to Pheonix. Then James rings her and tells her he has captured her mum so she goes off to meet him when she realises he had traped her. Then Edward comes and saves the day but Bella got bitten by james already so his venom is in her blood which could transform her into vampire,the poison without even trying a sip of her blood. She gets better and everyones happy.

I think Stephenie Meyer is a great author because her books are very realistic but then again mixed with a lot of fantasy. She writes a lot of description which usually would be very boring but I like the way she does it, I love the character of bella because the way she thinks is just like any other teenage girl and it is very cool to feel like so connected to a character who is in love with a vampire. I also like how in all of her books something exciting happens but each time it is completelly different and has nothing to do with the other stories but yet again it does. I haven't actually read lots of her books just the Twilight saga and I find it very intersting and exciting. They are the type of books that just pull you in and once you start reading you can't stop and you just feel like your in the book and feel completely connected to each and every character.

Bitten is the book I read. It’s about the live of the only existing female werewolf on earth, and she’s tired of it. She is tired of her life trying to hide and run away or follow and kill others. She tries to fit into the human world, but since she lived half of her life with werewolfs, she doesn’t know much about humans culture. When her werewolf pack is in trouble, she has to fly over and help them, Jeremy the Alpha, (pack leader) called her to come, she must obey him, even if she doesn’t want to, because Jeremy saved her life when she was bitten, and helped her understand her wolf-side. The reason why Elena needed to help was because a “mutt”, an outsider werewolf, that doesn’t know how to control its power and kills innocent people, is making trouble, and Elena and the pack need to find him and kill him, so that the humans don’t cause too much trouble investigating. Soon they discover that not only one mutt, but a whole group of mutts, is trying to take down the pack, after an intresting and estrategic fight, the pack gets the mutts down, but they lose some members of the pack too, which die in the fight.

It was a really nice book, her writing made it possible for me to think that maybe supernatural creatures exist, because everything sounded so real: how they hide, and how no one notices. I’d love to see a film of it, because it was simply amazing.

23 ABRIL: Día internacional del libro y los derechos de autor

El 23 de abril de 1616 fallecieron William Shakespeare y Miguel de Cervantes. La UNESCO escogió esta simbólica fecha para celebrar el Día Internacional del Libro y de los Derechos de Autor.
Durante las últimas semanas el Departamento de Inglés ha realizado actividades, lecturas, murales, etc. relacionadas con el dramaturgo y poeta William Shakespeare. También durante los días 27, 28 y 29 de Abril, coincidiendo con la semana cultural y coordinado por los departamentos de lenguas, tendrá lugar un intercambio libros entre los participantes que hayan donado libros anteriormente.
Shakespeare escribió más de 30 obras teatrales en verso entre las que destacan, por ejemplo, Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet y Othello. Además, entre otras obras poéticas, escribió 152 sonetos. Aquí tenéis uno de los más conocidos.

El primer trabajo discográfico que grabaron fue Love me do en 1962, que logró situarse en las listas de más éxito.
Ya más tarde, en 1963, She Loves you, Help! y Twist and Shout.
Tambien rodaron varias películas como Yellow Submarine , a Hard day's night y Help!
En esa década se podría decir que nació la "beatlemania".
Crearon la revolución musical y social y su influencia ha perdurado a lo largo de las décadas .
Sus canciones eran ingeniosas y originales, paradigmas de una época.

BREAKING THE HABIT - LINKIN PARK

La canción Breaking the habit forma parte del album Meteora.

Esta canción tiene un tema básico: salir de la rutina. Dentro de este tema se encuentran otros matices, como se muestra en el videoclip, tales como los suicidios, infidelidades, etc.

La canción tiene dos propósitos: reflejar la actualidad, el día a día, y quejarse de ésta, intentar escapar de ella. También habla de la facilidad de la gente para abandonar y caer en la tentación. El segundo es más difícil de encontrar, debido al tono negativo que transmite la canción, pero en ese mismo tono negativo se encuentra la queja. Se puede decir que es como una ironía. En resumen: es una canción muy profunda.

Hoy se celebra el Día Internacional del Teatro. Durante la semana cultural el departamento realizará actividades relacionadas con el poeta y dramaturgo William Shakespeare.

Aquí tenéis un fragmento de la adaptación cinematográfica de una de sus obras más conocidas, Romeo and Juliet, dirigida por Franco Zeffirelli en 1968. Esta legendaria historia de amor entre los hijos adolescentes de dos familias enfrentadas ha inspirado numerosas canciones, películas, ballets, parodias y hasta un musical (West Side Story).

Acto II Escena II, también conocida como "Escena del balcón".

Mr Brightside - The Killers

Esta canción de The Killers, publicada en su primer lp Hot fuss en 2004, casi ganó un Grammy en 2006. Tres video clips se hicieron para esta canción, aunque he elegido la versión a lo Moulin Rouge para que disfrutéis del derroche de pelos encrespados, maquillaje, terciopelo y disfraces de época.
Mr Brightside, que yo traduciría como "Don Lado Positivo" (optimista), es una sencilla canción sobre un tema complejo: los celos. ¿Qué no somos capaces de hacer por celos? Nos convierten en espías, en fantasmas, en homicidas...
Tengo dos interpretaciones para esta canción. Se aceptan sugerencias y contrainterpretaciones. ;-) Interpretación 1: Una mirada, un beso, un gesto... y ya te has enamorado. Pero esa chica es de otro. Al dolor de no poder estar juntos se une el de saber que está en otros brazos. Interpretación 2: Sólo fue un beso, un beso de nada. Tu pareja te confiesa que ha estado con otro, pero nada de qué preocuparse. A partir de ahí la mente empieza a desvariar y ya no hay vuelta atrás ¿o sí?
Una tercera interpretación es que todo es una pesadilla, de esas que te despiertan sobresaltado porque parecen más reales que la vida misma.
